Trail Mix with Randy 2/22/12

Dear Friends:

Something tells me the Blizzard of 2012 is still out there somewhere, but in the meantime I hope you’re enjoying this mild weather as much as I am.

Here’s my latest update from the campaign trail.

-Randy

Event with Majority Leader Cantor Raises Over $100k

My recent event with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor surpassed all expectations, and brought in more than $100k for my campaign. I want to again thank Leader Cantor and the event hosts for being the cornerstone of what I expect to be a very strong fundraising number put up by our campaign in the 1st Quarter of 2012.

Endorsed by the East Hampton Republicans
What can I say about the kind words and consistent support from Bill Wilkinson and the East Hampton Republicans? They’ve walked the walk on tax cuts, spending reductions and smaller government in East Hampton. They are the model for what we need to be doing in Washington, DC. Click this link, as the video says it all.

Obama-Bishop Budget a Blueprint for Disaster

I can’t wait to debate Tim Bishop so I can hear him try to defend his and President Obama’s record of four straight years of $1 trillion plus deficits. It’s clear that the President and Congressman Bishop just don’t get it when it comes to sound economic and fiscal policy. They refuse to understand that we cannot tax, spend and borrow our way to economic prosperity and opportunity.

While 13 million people are still unemployed nationally and almost 3 million more haven’t even tried to look for a job in the last month, things are even worse here on Long Island. Recent Long Island Association economic reports show LI job losses are in the thousands while other parts of New York State are adding jobs. Proof positive that small businesses are the engine of economic growth here in Suffolk County, and the policies of Barack Obama and Tim Bishop are suffocating them.

Taking a Bipartisan Stand for Long Island

This week I backed efforts by a bipartisan group of local lawmakers seeking to strike a provision from the House transportation legislation that would eliminate a dedicated funding stream for the Mass Transit Account started during President Ronald Reagan’s administration. The account is currently funded by a portion of federal gas tax revenue. An amendment to preserve the Mass Transit Account in the Highway Trust Fund has been put forth by Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler and supported by New York Republicans Reps. Nan Hayworth, Chris Gibson, Michael Grimm, and Bob Turner.

I support our local lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in making this stand on behalf of Long Island and our region. Long Island taxpayers already send too much money to Washington without seeing any return. Eliminating dedicated funding for mass transit would only make it worse.

Building a Winning Team

The positive feedback I have received following the hiring of Diana Weir as my Campaign Manager has been off the charts. Today, I am announcing that we hired Brittany Belt as Diana’s Deputy Campaign Manager. Brittany will be in charge of building and motivating our volunteer army for the campaign. Brittany was a key player on Congressman Bob Turner’s upset win last year. Feel free to contact Diana at dweir@randy2012.com and Brittany at bbelt@randy2012.com.

Obama-Bishop Budget is Blueprint for Disaster

Bishop will have to defend four straight years of $1 trillion plus deficits

February 14, 2012 – Saying that incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop will have to defend his and President Obama’s record of four straight years of $1 trillion plus deficits on the campaign trail this year, self-made businessman Randy Altschuler today called President Obama’s FY2013 Budget proposal a blueprint for economic disaster.

“After four years together, it’s clear that Barack Obama and Tim Bishop just don’t get it when it comes to sound economic and fiscal policy,” said Altschuler. “They refuse to understand that we cannot tax, spend and borrow our way to economic prosperity and opportunity. Frankly speaking, the President’s latest budget proposal is a blueprint for disaster.”

Altschuler pointed to recent statistics from the US Department of Labor indicating that nearly 13 million people are still unemployed nationally, while an almost additional 3 million haven’t even tried to look for a job in the last month. Altschuler said the problem is even worse on Long Island, where small businesses are the backbone of the economy.

“While the national jobs picture is bleak, it’s even worse here on Long Island,” said Altschuler, pointing to recent Long Island Association economic reports that show job losses in the thousands while other parts of New York State are adding jobs. “Small businesses are the engine of economic growth here in Suffolk County, and the policies of Barack Obama and Tim Bishop are suffocating them.”

Op-Ed on ObamaCare Mandates

An Op-Ed Submitted by Randy Altschuler
Candidate for Congress, NY-1

Dear Editor:

President Obama’s decision to force Catholic organizations to provide insurance plans for their employees that cover services like contraception – despite the fact that doing so would violate a major tenet of their faith – continues a callous disregard for our constitutionally-protected religious freedoms under this administration.

Likewise, incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop’s failure to break from the President and stand up for his Catholic constituents when I challenged him to do so, highlight Tim Bishop’s unfortunate legacy as a hyper-partisan, career politician who doesn’t have the courage to speak out against his own party bosses and put his Suffolk County constituents first.

Bishop’s continued silence and rigid partisanship persisted even as scores of his fellow Democrats, including liberals like Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, publicly called on President Obama to cease his attack on religious freedoms.

Bishop only briefly broke his silence to release a cynical and misleading statement attempting to turn this issue into a referendum on access to contraception.

Make no mistake, the issue at hand is not access to contraception, but rather Tim Bishop’s blind support for ObamaCare and its big government mandates, even when they violate our constitutionally-protected religious freedoms.

While Congressman Bishop largely sat on the sidelines, I engaged on this issue publicly, calling on President Obama to find a solution and encouraging him and Mr. Bishop to support legislation by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, “The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012.”

Senator Rubio’s legislation would have established a firm religious exemption to the aforementioned insurance mandate under ObamaCare by simply stating that the federal government can’t force religious organizations to abandon the fundamental tenets of their faith. It can’t be any more common sense than that.

Naturally, Senator Rubio’s legislation hasn’t moved, proving that “common sense in Washington” is truly an oxymoron.

While I am sure this particular debate will continue in the days and weeks to come, the larger fight here is really about the damaging effects of ObamaCare and Congressman Bishop’s insistent belief that his vote for a big government takeover of our healthcare system was the right thing to do despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Tim Bishop and other ObamaCare supporters promised ObamaCare would lower healthcare costs; they were wrong. They promised ObamaCare would not result in big government mandates; they were wrong. They promised that ObamaCare would not infringe upon constitutionally protected rights of religious freedom; and now they are being proved wrong on that, too.

When is enough going to be enough?

Congressman Bishop’s blind spot on ObamaCare harkens back to his disastrous stretch of public town halls in 2009, when thousands of Suffolk County taxpayers literally pleaded with him face-to-face, asking him to oppose this legislation. As you will remember, he responded then by thumbing his nose at all of us and helping President Obama and Nancy Pelosi ram through this costly expansion of the federal government’s size and power.

Now, nearly three years later, as the consequences of his actions become more and more apparent, will Congressman Bishop finally admit that ObamaCare is bad law? Will he finally admit that it should be repealed and replaced immediately with reforms that eliminate these intrusive government mandates and actually lower healthcare costs for individuals, families, seniors and small businesses here in Suffolk County?

Unfortunately, given Tim Bishop’s track record on this issue, I’m not holding my breath.

Altschuler: Congressman’s mealy-mouthed political response doesn’t cut it

February 10, 2012, St. James, NY – Congressman Tim Bishop’s weak, mealy-mouthed response to the controversy surrounding the ObamaCare mandates that would force the Catholic Church to choose between violating its core beliefs or being sanctioned by the federal government, prove how out-of-touch the longtime incumbent is with the people he is supposed to represent, charged Republican congressional candidate Randy Altschuler today.

“While a growing number of Democrats across the country are publicly breaking from President Obama and the administration’s frontal assault on constitutionally protected religious freedoms, Congressman Tim Bishop’s refusal to do the same exposes him for the radical, out-of-touch partisan that he has become,” said Altschuler. “Despite Congressman Bishop’s efforts to make it one, this is not a referendum on access to contraception, but rather a valid criticism of his blind support for ObamaCare and its big government mandates, even when they are clearly infringing upon the religious freedoms of his constituents.”

Altschuler said ObamaCare’s growing unpopularity is rooted in the fact that its supporter’s, like Congressman Bishop, made promises that they haven’t delivered on.

“They promised ObamaCare would lower healthcare costs; they were wrong. They promised ObamaCare wouldn’t result in big government mandates; they were wrong. They promised that ObamaCare wouldn’t infringe upon constitutionally protected rights of religious freedom; but, that is exactly what it has done.” said Altschuler. “When is enough going to be enough?”

Altschuler called on Bishop to set down his partisan sword and join with common sense Republicans, Democrats and Independents in calling on the President to reverse course and stand by his oath to uphold and defend the Constitutional rights of people of all faiths.

“Congressman Tim Bishop has a choice to make,” said Altschuler. “Stand with his Suffolk County constituents who value their religious freedoms and the Catholic Church’s right to remain loyal to the tenets of its faith, or stand with President Obama and the radical elements of the Democratic Party who refuse to admit that ObamaCare is simply bad law.”

“Overwhelming” Endorsement by Suffolk County Republicans

Following the strong recommendation of a formal screening committee that interviewed both announced Republican candidates for Congress in New York’s 1st Congressional District, Suffolk County GOP Chairman John Jay LaValle announced earlier this week that I had earned the endorsement of the Suffolk County Republican Committee.

Chairman LaValle’s statement: “Randy Altschuler is a self-made businessman who came from humble beginnings to achieve the American Dream for him and his family.  Over the last few years, I have come to know Randy as a man of principle and integrity. He has the real world experience we need in Washington to get us out of the current economic mess that has so deeply affected Long Island, its small businesses and the hardworking taxpayers who call Suffolk County home.”

This is great news!  The Republican Party is energized and united.  Together, we are going to defeat Tim Bishop this November.

Advancing in the NRCC’s Young Guns Program

This week I became one of just eleven candidates nationwide to achieve “Contender” status in the National Republican Congressional Committee’s Young Guns Program.  The recognition solidifies my status as one of the top Republican challengers in the country, and NY-1 as one of the top races to watch this November.

Bad News for Incumbent Congressman Bishop

In what the folks at Gallup called the latest example of Americans’ widely held negative views of incumbent politicians, congressional approval ratings hit a new record low of 10% this past month.  That’s bad news for long-time incumbent politicians like my opponent Tim Bishop.  I look forward to holding Mr. Bishop accountable for his record in this campaign, while outlining my own vision to restore prosperity and opportunity to for all Americans.

Fundraiser with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor

I am looking forward to an upcoming fundraiser for my campaign with Special Guest, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.  The event will be held on Monday, February 13 from 12 noon to 1:30pm at the Cornell Club in NYC.  Congressman Cantor is a good friend and has been extremely helpful to me from the second I decided to enter politics.  If you are interested in attending the event or making a contribution, please contact my Finance Director atevents@Randy2012.com.

Altschuler Backs Rubio Legislation Defending Religious Freedom

Posted ago by Randy 2012

Criticizes ObamaCare mandates and calls out Rep. Bishop

February 8, 2012, St. James, NY – Congressional candidate Randy Altschuler released the following statement today backing legislation by Florida Senator Marco Rubio defending religious freedom, while criticizing President Obama and incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop.

“The Obama Administration’s decision to force Catholic organizations to provide insurance plans for their employees that cover contraception – despite the fact that doing so would violate a major tenet of their religious faith – callously ignores the right to freedom of religion granted in our Constitution by the Founding Fathers.

This is big government overreach at its worst. It is proof that ObamaCare and its mandates need to be repealed and replaced with free market-based healthcare reforms.

Not surprisingly, ObamaCare’s biggest champion on Long Island, incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop, has remained silent on this issue, despite the fact that he represents a substantial Catholic population here in Suffolk County.

The controversy, and his refusal to weigh in, exposes Bishop for what he is: a hyper-partisan, career politician who doesn’t have the courage to stand up to his own party when they threaten core Constitutional rights.

Despite Bishop’s disappearing act, yesterday, for the first time, the Obama Administration seemed to realize they have made a huge mistake and are starting to signal a retreat. Let’s hope it’s more than just campaign posturing.

[Source]

If the President is truly willing to admit that he made a terrible mistake, and is looking for a common sense solution, I suggest he throw his support behind Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s new legislation, “The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012.”

According to Senator Rubio, the bill seeks to establish a firm religious exemption to the aforementioned insurance mandate under ObamaCare by simply stating that the federal government can’t force religious organizations to abandon the fundamental tenets of their faith. It can’t be any more commonsense than that.

I urge Congressman Bishop to sponsor Senator Rubio’s legislation in the House and, should the President refuse to act, I urge the Congress to pass Senator Rubio’s legislation in short order and force the President’s hand on this issue.”

East Hampton’s Diana Weir Named Campaign Manager

I am proud to announce that Diana Weir will be Campaign Manager for the 2012 campaign. Diana is widely-respected across Long Island in the private, public and political arenas. She is the former Executive Vice-President of the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), is currently a member of the LIPA Board of Trustees, was the first Hispanic councilwoman on the East Hampton Town Board, and formerly served as Chief of Staff to Congressman Michael Forbes, directing the overall operations of the Washington and Long Island offices, resigning before Forbes defected to the Democratic Party in 1999.

Check out my press release here.

And one of the many positive news stories sparked by my announcement that Diana had joined the campaign:  here.

Our Fundraising Outpaced Special Interest Darling Bishop in Q4

We outraised Congressman Bishop in the final quarter of the year – $214k to $197k. After announcing that I was seeking a rematch in May, we’ve raised nearly $700k. It’s almost unheard of for a challenger to out-raise a longtime incumbent Congressman in a given quarter. Thank you for making it happen! Your support is making a difference!

Not surprisingly, a Newsday story revealed that Congressman Bishop was relying heavily on campaign cash from entrenched special interest PAC’s bent on defending the status quo. Bishop raked nearly a half million dollars from these PAC’s! We know who he’s looking out for.

Mark Your Calendars

Join some of Suffolk County’s most dedicated grassroots conservatives for a Cocktail Reception attended by myself and NY State GOP Chairman Ed Cox, among others.

The event will be hosted by Bob and Mary Meyer, and their Board of Directors: Greg Celi, Stanley Warsaw, Frank Rampino, Jacques Dittes, Ed Moore, Craig Johnson, Catherine Tenek, Pat Kubis, and Rob Calise. Toniann Notofrensco will be singing, “God Bless America” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The event will be held on Wednesday, February 15th from 7:00 – 11:00pm at The Ballroom of the Riverhead Polish Hall, 214 Marcy Avenue, Riverhead, NY, 11901. Tickets are still available for $15 per person. Special tables are reserved for Wounded Warriors and Veterans. Altschuler Names Diana Weir Campaign Manager

Posted ago by Randy 2012

Citing her deep roots in the community and vast private, public and political experience, self-made businessman Randy Altschuler today announced that East Hamptons’s Diana Weir will be the campaign manager for his 2012 congressional campaign.

Weir, is the former Executive Vice-President of the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), is currently a member of the LIPA Board of Trustees, was the first Hispanic councilwoman on the East Hampton Town Board, and formerly served as Chief of Staff to Congressman Michael Forbes, directing the overall operations of the Washington and Long Island offices, resigning before Forbes defected to the Democratic Party in 1999.

“Diana is widely-respected across Long Island in the private, public and political arenas,” said Altschuler. “I am thrilled to formally announce her hiring today as the person leading my team on the ground. Today’s news continues the positive momentum my campaign has demonstrated since I announced my plans to seek a rematch against Congressman Bishop last spring.”

Prior to serving in government, Weir served as Senior Vice-President at the Bank of The Hamptons, and prior to that, as Senior Vice-President and Corporate Secretary for Smithtown Bancorp. Weir was appointed by Governor Pataki to the SUNY Stony Brook Council, served as a Suffolk County Human Rights Commissioner and co-chaired the Economic Development panel at the Long Island Hispanic Leadership Summit. Weir’s honors include New York City El Diario / La Prensa’s “Distinguished Latinas,” Suffolk County Hispanic Heritage Month’s “Hispanic Role Model” and the U.S. Small Business Administration’s “Small Business Minority Advocate of the Year.”

“Given the depressed state of our local economy, Long Island is in desperate need of a representative with Randy’s business experience and proven track record of creating jobs,” said Weir, who has two children and three grandchildren. “Raised by a single mother, Randy overcame his humble beginnings to turn himself into a successful entrepreneur. Randy embodies the American Dream and I couldn’t be more excited to take on this challenge and lead the charge to defeat Tim Bishop in November.”

Altschuler Takes on Failed Washington Establishment

Altschuler Pans State of the Union Speech

Says Americans are frustrated by too much rhetoric, not enough action in DC

January 25, 2012 – Americans across the political spectrum are frustrated by the overabundance of rhetoric and lack of real solutions coming out of Washington, DC when it comes to job growth, fiscal responsibility and government reform, said congressional challenger Randy Altschuler today.

“If President Obama puts as much energy into growing the economy and balancing the budget as he does pitting Americans against each other with his tired class warfare rhetoric, perhaps the state of our union would be in much better shape than it is today,” said Altschuler, who criticized the entire Washington establishment for failing to find common sense solutions to the problems faced by people in Suffolk County and around the country.

“The people of Suffolk County are still losing jobs by the thousands and struggling to pay some of the highest taxes in the country,” said Altschuler.  “Frankly, they have had it with all the partisan finger-pointing – they want solutions; they want action.”

“Unfortunately, our current Congressman Tim Bishop, is part of the problem in Washington,” said Altschuler.  “Bishop has spent nearly a decade in Congress as little more than a partisan rubberstamp, standing by idly as the local economy has suffered.  If elected, I will use my real world experience as a self-made businessman to work with people on both sides of the aisle to actually get stuff done!  I will work to implement policies that help small business in Suffolk County start growing again and ensure that our children work and raise their own families on the Island.”
